Susan Farretta

Director of Education
I am pleased to serve as the Head of School for iSTEAM Academy. My plan is to establish a welcoming, nurturing, safe climate that enhances individual growth and responsibility. I aim to help students develop a positive self-image while exploring and excelling in their academic pursuits – especially in computer science! In addition to curriculum goals and overall student life, I also oversee business affairs, admissions and recruitment as well as accreditation. I have worked as a full time educator in the valley for the past 12 years. In 2005, I taught Career Technical Education (CTE) classes at the Scottsdale Unified School District. In the computer lab, students earned credit for classes like Career Exploration, Financial Planning, Web Design, Cool Stuff and computer basics. During this time, I was certified to teach Computer Information college accredited classes (dual enrollment for Maricopa Community Colleges). I participated in the “gamification” of curriculum pilot program and with ASU to create exciting curriculum designed to attract high school students to Computer Science degree paths. My next educational step was a district level position. I was the first CTE STEM Coordinator at the Phoenix Union High School District. This was a great opportunity for me to help my fellow teachers build STEM related projects into their curriculum. A highlight was being trained at the Buck Institute for Education in Atlanta on how to implement Project Based Learning (PBL) into curriculum. In 2015, I became the Educational Initiatives Director at AZ SciTech ‘s Chief Science Officer Program. I helped to launch the Chief Science Officer Initiative nationwide! Prior to my career in education, I worked at Motorola and On Semiconductor in Phoenix for 17 years. I started my career in supply chain at Mesa Mos6 wafer fab and retired as an International Business Manager. My IT team developed internet-based inventory costing for microchips and online bill of materials to enable expansion of the supply base while saving Motorola millions in dial up fees. I was born in Ohio and my family lives in Ahwatukee where we enjoy hiking with our four dogs (Tito, Marley, Presley and Brown dog)
